How to Set Up Your Gmail SMTP: Settings & Configuration

SMTP is the system for sending emails across the internet. Google uses this system for Gmail. This article teaches you how to send emails with the Gmail SMTP Server. We’ll go over all settings and configurations.

What is SMTP?

SMTP or Simple Mail Transfer Protocol is the system that sends and delivers email across the internet. It handles the delivery of messages from a sender to a recipient’s mailbox. Email servers use SMTP to send and receive messages.

When an email is sent from one server to another, the receiving server uses SMTP to fetch the message from the sender’s server. To do this, it establishes a connection with the sender’s server using SMTP commands. Once the message has been retrieved, it’s delivered to the recipient’s mailbox. SMTP is a simple and reliable protocol supported by all major email providers. It’s the standard protocol for sending and receiving emails.

What is Gmail SMTP server?

Gmail’s SMTP server is a tool for sending emails through different email clients using your Gmail address or domain. You can use this feature with your free Gmail account or sign up for a Google Workspace account for a higher daily email limit.

The SMTP server for Gmail is smtp.gmail.com. You must enter your Gmail account username and password in the client’s authentication settings. Then you can send and receive emails as usual.

What are Gmail SMTP Settings?

Gmail SMTP server has the following settings:

  • Gmail SMTP server address: smtp.gmail.com
  • Gmail SMTP username: Your Gmail address ([email protected])
  • Gmail SMTP password: Your Gmail password
  • Gmail SMTP port (TLS): 587
  • Gmail SMTP port (SSL): 465
  • Gmail SMTP TLS/SSL required: Yes

While Gmail’s SMTP server is a great way to send emails, some limits are in place to prevent abuse. The limit is 100 recipients per message and 500 messages per day. If you exceed this limit, your account will be blocked by Google.

These limits shouldn’t be a problem for most users. If you need to send more than 500 messages daily, consider using a different free SMTP service or setting up your own SMTP server.

How to configure Gmail SMTP server settings for your own domain

Start by enabling the POP3 service for your email in Gmail. You simply tell Gmail to download all of your emails from the hosting email server. To enable POP3 for your mail account:

  1. Log in to your Gmail account.
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. Go to ‘Accounts and Import’ and click on ‘Add a mail account’.

7.  If your settings are correct, Gmail will confirm that it has added your account.

Once you get a confirmation, Gmail will download your emails from the other domain. Now you can read all your incoming messages. Gmail will ask you for your server’s SMTP settings to use the Gmail SMTP with other email accounts. Now you’ll just have to verify your email address, after which you can use Gmail to send and receive emails from another email client.
